Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on August 24 1972 within Long Beach California. DuVernay was inspired to follow her passion of art by her aunt Denise in her early years. Aunt Denise was a nurse who worked shifts at night so she could spend the day to literature, art, theater and other interests. DuVernay was a fan of the movie West Side Story, which she introduced to her. DuVernay learned by example that art could be a vehicle for activism. Similarly DuVernay's mother was well-educated and encouraged the importance of speaking up by using the arts. DuVernay who was born alongside her extended family at Compton was a summer resident at Lowndes County Alabama in the house of her father's family. Her father recalled the civil rights protests on the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the close town of Selma Alabama. DuVernay's time in Alabama's Selma led her later on to create a documentary about Martin Luther King Jr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay graduated with a graduation certificate at Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. After graduation she was enrolled at an institution called the University of California Los Angeles where she received certificates in English as well as African American studies. When she was still studying, DuVernay was interested in creating in broadcast journalism. She started as an intern with CBS News during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembers being assigned to look over the residence that one of the members of the jury and take a look at their trash. The work she was assigned to did not leave her satisfied by journalism and she chose to switch careers into the publicity industry. DuVernay started her first job as a publicist at the small studio that she worked in after graduating from college. From this position she started her own PR company known as The DuVernay Agency in 1999. Alongside PR, her agency launched a number of marketing and lifestyle platforms, such as Urban Beauty Collective, the Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
